what you dont know about Black Culture… could get me killed…

August 21, 2014

I am still tripping on ignorant reactionary assumption making, conclusion jumping white american abysmal blatant and arrogant interpretation of black culture, community and institutions.

Capt Ron Johnson of the Missouri Highway Patrol is not in a GANG. He is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. black Greek letter organizations have existed since 1906 – “SkeeWeee”(this means that I am an AKA)

holding up ‘strong peace sign’ -Two Fingers (index and middle) palm in toward body – is not a gang sign, but a cultural twist on the 60’s peace sign palm out.

not all black people are first generation college – 3 HBCU’s were established prior to the start of the Civil War.

Slavery existed on this continent from 1619 to 1865.

reconstruction existed from 1866-1893

JimCrow Segregation – American Apartheid existed on the federal level from 1896 to 1965. * various state laws pre and post date federal segregation.

think about this in reference to your life, your parents, grandparents.

state laws prohibiting interracial marriage were struck down in 1967.

James Byrd was lynched in 1998.
the practice of killing people by extrajudicial mob action, occurred in the United States chiefly from the late 18th century through the 1960s.

Lynchings took place most frequently against African-American men in the Southern US from 1890 to the 1920s with a peak in 1892.
records on lynchings are now lost under the category hate crime

Perspective. Same facts, different perspective, different outcome.

August 21, 2014

I fear that the incompetence of the American educational process contributes to the extreme short-term memory and lack of critical analysis I see when people are confronted with new and different ideas.
I suspect it is part of the plot to maintain the status quo.
Those who do not know and understand history are doomed to repeat it.
Here is an exercise in perspective that I used to do with elementary age students in

the Junior Great Books program

Think about the story of Jack in the beanstalk.
Remember how Jack is portrayed as the protagonist and as a good guy.
Jack is the one that we cheer for so that he can save his mother and the farm and destroy the evil giant in the process.

Now think about the exact same story the exact same fax from the perspective of the Giant’s widow. She and the giant have a home in their community where they have friends and neighbors and family and some little somebody climb the ladder from someplace else and steals their valuables and kills her husband.

They operate within the norms of their community. So when their house is burglarized and a member of their family is killed, who is the good guy? It certainly isn’t Jack!

Perspective. Same facts, different perspective, different outcome.

Take a look at the American revolution.
The colonists were seen by Great Britain as ungrateful traitors.
The colonists were seen by themselves as revolutionaries.
Great Britain saw itself as noble and privileged and entitled to the respect and courtesy of the colonists
The colonists saw Great Britain as a despotic tyrannical ruler.

Perspective. Same facts, different perspective, different outcome.

part of what is happening in #ferguson is directly related to segregation,

the disparity of education and income opportunities.
I cant say “white people are feral animals who deserve whatever happens to them” because I actually know white people, who love me and i love them.

you have to be in a world where you never see humanity in black people either because you dont know any or because you are a hateful cur.

So I am in the airport and CNN coverage of FERGUSON…

August 21, 2014

So I am in the airport and CNN is covering #Ferguson

and two 50ish european Americans state that #MikeBrown had it coming.

I asked if either had a son. they both did, young men in their early twenties.

I asked if these sons of theirs had every mouthed off to them or other authority figures, they said yes,

I asked if these sons of theirs had ever taken something that didnt belong to them without permission.. they nodded slowly realizing that they probably didnt want to play any more.

I asked were these sons of theirs still alive, did they have an opportunity to learn from their mistakes and become authority figures. one looked of and the other turned red. “what is your point?”

thats good. because some people, like Michael Brown dont have that opportunity. It not like they had it coming..

Hey – are your sons Black.. either of them… descendant of the African Diaspora? no?

neither of them?

maybe that the difference?
